About Vic Anderson

Westminster U.S. Pipe Band Championship Trophy
Anderson Pipe Band operates under the direction of Victor Anderson, who acts as pipe major and registered playing instructor. Vic is a native Tulsan and began playing the saxophone at age 10 with Oklahoma jazz legend Ken Downing as his teacher. At age 15, Victor studied Highland bagpipes with the late Mark Wallace (AKA William Blackfox), a well-known Oklahoma figure in both piping and and the SCA. At that time, he began piping with Green Country Caledonian pipes and drums.

Victor continued his music education at the University of North Texas School of Music, where he performed with the North Texas Lab Bands, and studied with such greats as Dan Haearle, Rich Matteson, Jack Petersen, Neil Slater, and Jim Riggs. His professional musical carreer was launched in the Dallas area where he was a regular with Al "TNT" Braggs, the Phares Corder Orchestra, Warren White and Infinity, Pete Petersen and the Collection, and Little Jack Melody and his Young Turks, among others. Following a year and half tour with Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians, Victor returned to Tulsa where he began teaching saxophone, jazz improvisation, and music theory for Tulsa Public Schools, and independently. Since then he has been a fixture in many local Tulsa bands, including Oklahoma Sinfonia/Signature Symphony, Ted Moses Quintet, Tulsa Starlight Bands, and has appeared with many major acts, including the Temptations, Ray Charles, John Faddis, Pete Christlieb, and Rosemary Clooney. Currently active with the Latin-Jazz group Mezclave, and the Jeff Shadley group, in addition to a busy piping schedule.

Vic on Pipes at Harwelden
In the early 1990's, Vic teamed up with Tulsa Highland Pipes and Drums, which became Tulsa Pipes and Drums under his direction as Pipe Major and manager. With the need to maintain a more focused identity, autonomy, and independence, the band was ultimately re-organized as Anderson Pipe Band which is now in its 13th year of operation. In 2005, Victor began piping with the U.S. champion Westminster Pipe Band, and that same year, led Anderson Pipe Band to the EUSPBA Southwest Branch Grade V championship. Still active with Westminster Pipe Band, Vic is listed as Piping Instructor for Anderson Pipe Band under EUSPBA rules.
